South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong declared a new strategic partnership on Sunday, promising tighter ties in defense, trade and technology. The announcement came during a joint press conference at the Korean presidential palace after Wong visited Seoul for talks.
Lee highlighted the shared strengths of both nations – “we’ve both grown a lot thanks to our people and a free‑trade mindset, even with limited land and resources,” he said. The leaders agreed to a first step: South Korea will export beef and pork from Jeju Island to Singapore.
Both sides also pushed for deeper cooperation in key areas. “We’ll work together on security, defense, AI, advanced tech, people‑to‑people exchanges and fight cross‑border crime like online scams,” Lee added. Wong said Singapore sees big opportunities in green technology, digital industries, and security, and he pledged full support for South Korea’s peace efforts on the peninsula.
To make the partnership real, President Lee and PM Wong signed memorandums of understanding covering digital cooperation, logistics and shipping, culture, and sports. The agreement aims to help both countries address global challenges such as climate change and transnational crime amid a shifting international order.
Wong is in Seoul after attending the APEC summit and related events in nearby Gyeongju. The new partnership marks a significant step forward for the two Asian neighbors.
