Seoul, Oct 15 – A South Korean woman in her 30s was discovered dead near the Vietnam‑Cambodia border on Oct 8, local police say. The body was autopsied, and officials found no evidence of foul play.
The incident sparked a quick response from the Seoul foreign ministry. After a Korean national—who had escaped a phishing‑scam gang in Cambodia—offered a tip, the ministry asked Vietnamese security officials to investigate the woman’s whereabouts. The tipper claimed she had been held at a local hotel for a long time.
South Korean police think the woman may have been involved with a local voice‑phishing group. They are still probing whether she died while attempting to return to Cambodia under pressure from criminal contacts.
The case comes amid a recent surge of crimes against Koreans in Cambodia, where many have fallen victim to job‑scam schemes. Seoul officials have been working to bring back about 60 Koreans who were detained in Cambodia because of these scams.
In related news, police announced that two South Korean nationals—originally among 63 Koreans detained in Cambodia during a crackdown on job scams—have returned home this week. They were flown back on a national flag carrier after the authorities obtained warrants and placed some suspects on Interpol’s Red Notice list.
Police will review the autopsy results from Vietnamese officials to determine the exact cause of death. The investigation remains a priority for both Korean and Vietnamese authorities.
