South Korea’s Prez Lee vows reform of Seoul-focused system to promote regional development

South Korean President Lee Jae‑Myung called for sweeping changes to curb Seoul’s dominance and boost growth in other regions. Speaking to the country’s mayors and governors for the first time since he took office in June, Lee stressed that the central and local governments must work as equal partners.

“We must fix the Seoul‑centric system and create balanced regional development,” Lee said. He announced plans to decentralise local finances and move key government offices out of the capital. In next year’s budget, the government will give extra subsidies to peripheral areas to strengthen local budgets, which have already grown from about 3.8 trillion won to over 10.6 trillion won.

Lee reminded the audience that South Korea began its modern local‑government elections three decades ago, yet many critics say local autonomy is still “merely symbolic.” He pledged that the central government will partner with local leaders to improve people’s lives and build a stronger future for the republic.

On a related note, Lee also warned against hate speech and disinformation. During a cabinet meeting, he urged officials to treat online hate directed at certain groups as a crime. He blamed such acts for rising social anxiety amid growing political polarization. Lee highlighted recent anti‑China protests, a resignation at the Korean Red Cross over racist remarks, and the spread of fake news. He called for swift action, urging police to root out hate crimes and for political circles to unite against misinformation.

Overall, Lee’s message mixes reform of regional disparities with a crackdown on hate speech, aiming to protect democracy and everyday life in South Korea.
