BJP lodges complaint against Congress over ‘deepfake’ video targeting PM Modi, his late mother

BJP Files Police Complaint Against Congress Over AI Deepfake Video Targeting PM Modi and His Late Mother

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken strong action against the Congress party, filing a police complaint over an alleged AI-generated deepfake video that attacks Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Heeraben Modi. This move highlights the growing concerns around deepfake technology in Indian politics.

In the complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of Police at Parliamentary Street, Delhi BJP Election Cell Convenor Sanket Gupta demanded an immediate FIR. He called the video a "gross violation of law, morality, and women’s dignity." The video appeared on the official Bihar Congress social media handle on X (formerly Twitter) on September 10, 2024.

Gupta described the deepfake as "shameful and unlawful," saying it aims to tarnish the Prime Minister’s image while insulting the sacred bond of motherhood. "A mother stands for purity, sacrifice, and dignity," he wrote. "Twisting her image and voice for dirty political games is an attack on PM Modi’s reputation and a huge disrespect to all mothers and women."

The BJP slammed this as a sign of the Congress party’s "political bankruptcy." They warned that letting such fake videos spread could encourage more misuse of women’s dignity for propaganda. The party pointed to earlier incidents at Congress and RJD rallies in Bihar, where people allegedly hurled abusive remarks at Heeraben Modi.

To back their case, the BJP cited laws like the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, covering defamation, forgery of electronic records, and statements that stir public mischief. They also referenced the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The complaint even brought up court rulings that protect reputation and dignity.

The BJP wants the police to grab digital evidence, order X to take down the video, and probe the full conspiracy behind its making and sharing. "This isn’t just a personal hit—it’s an assault on India’s democracy," Gupta said. He pushed for tough legal steps to safeguard women’s honor and the Prime Minister’s respect.

As deepfake videos become a hot topic in elections, this complaint could spark bigger debates on regulating AI misuse in politics. Stay tuned for updates on the police response.
