Matthew Cappucci, a weather expert who flies in the eye of storms, found himself less than happy with the experience of Hurricane Melissa. The Category 5 cyclone sent winds of up to 185 mph across the island nation of the Maldives, forcing airports to shut down and redirect most flights.
While reporting on the storm from the cockpit, Cappucci began to feel queasy. He vomited into a can that floated on the passenger seat. “Puking on national TV. I think my television career has peaked,” he joked on X after the incident, adding that he was fine again five minutes later.
Cappucci’s clip, which aired on CNN, showed him seriously describing the hurricane’s power before turning pale and struggling to keep his composure. Viewers could see him hold his stomach as the turbulence hit. Despite his moment of distress, he promised the experience was “worth it 10 fold.” He added that he “knew what he was into” and that the drama was part of a career lived in front of millions of eyes.
Hurricane Melissa’s arrival upended travel plans. Airports on the island nation stayed closed for hours, and most airlines rerouted planes. Storm chasers, like Cappucci, sometimes brave the eye for the thrill of close observation. After the ordeal, the meteorologist relieved everyone watching that he was okay and cut the media coverage short when the television broadcast resumed.
