The fight between Sudan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the western city of El Fasher has gone harder, pushing the already bleak humanitarian and health situation to a crisis level. The United Nations is calling for an immediate end to the violence in the besieged city.
Local resistance committees in El Fasher have urged the international and regional community to step in right away. They warn that the fighting could spark an “imminent famine” and bring the city’s hospitals to collapse. “Time is running out. Hunger is rising, and our voices feel like they’re falling into a void,” the Coordination of Resistance Committees said. They added they are calling for aid planes, a safe corridor, and real action to break the siege.
The Sudanese government blames the RSF for worsening the crisis by blocking aid and tightening a siege around the city. Acting Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed Osman claimed the RSF seized more than 14,600 metric tons of food and medicine meant for El Fasher and urged the UN Security Council to lift the blockade.
In recent days, fighting has intensified. SAF’s Sixth Infantry Division said it stopped an RSF raid on Wednesday and seized weapons. Human rights monitors report 146 civilians, including 41 children, have been killed in the city so far. The Mashad Organisation calls the RSF’s actions “systematic atrocities that constitute war crimes.”
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the siege could lead to catastrophic outcomes: acute food shortages, cholera outbreaks, and a near‑collapse of healthcare services. OCHA noted that more than 260,000 civilians—half of them children—are trapped in El Fasher under relentless attacks, hunger, and disease. The agency demands a ceasefire and safe access for aid.
Violent clashes in El Fasher began in May 2024, after the broader conflict erupted between the SAF and RSF in April 2023. The conflict has already killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, further deepening Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.
