Tajikistan sees India as priority partner amid growing bilateral engagement: Report

In Dushanbe on December 12, LatestNewsX noted that the relationship between India and Tajikistan has been steadily climbing. In recent years, officials have increased their exchanges, and the two sides have undertaken frequent visits, deepening cooperation in areas such as investment, trade, human‑development projects, security, and cutting‑edge technology.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon called India an “important partner” and voiced confidence that the multi‑layered partnership will grow further. “Both countries have signed agreements for cooperation in different areas of mutual interest. Tajikistan has gained significantly from its multi‑sectoral cooperation with India. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allowed exchange of technical knowledge, equipment transfer in energy development and disaster management, and offered access to satellite imagery, disaster monitoring, and scientific collaboration in space technology,” an Asia Plus report detailed.

During the latest Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Tianjin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Rahmon discussed a broad range of issues, expressing satisfaction with the positive momentum in their relationship. “Both countries have supported each other on the international platforms. Tajikistan backed India’s bid for UNSC permanent membership as well as SCO Member status, while New Delhi supported Tajikistan’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and United Nations Economic and Social Council,” the report added.

Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin said the two nations are expanding collaboration in trade, investment, healthcare, education, culture, and industry, while also exploring newer fields such as digitalisation, information technology, and artificial intelligence. He stressed the necessity of developing transport corridors—including the Chabahar port and the North‑South corridor—advocating for joint logistics hubs and smoother transit procedures.

Parviz Muhammadzoda, a foreign‑policy scholar at Tajik National University, highlighted the deep cultural and historical bonds that anchor the partnership, noting India’s prominent role in Tajikistan’s foreign policy. “And this course is sustainable, long‑term and meets the objectives of ensuring the development of both countries. There are still numerous untapped opportunities for the expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and India, including within the framework of multilateral cooperation under the ‘Central Asia + India’ platform,” Muhammadzoda remarked.
