Zanzibar’s popular president Hussein Ali Mwinyi was sworn in for a second five‑year term on Saturday, after winning last Wednesday’s general election with an overwhelming 74.8 % of the vote. The ceremony at New Amaan Complex Stadium drew thousands of residents, senior officials and diplomats, including Tanzania’s Vice President Philip Mpango.

Chief Justice Khamis Ramadhani Abdalla Shaaban administered the oath. After taking the oath, Mwinyi inspected the armed‑forces guard of honour and thanked his supporters for their confidence. He promised that his new administration will prioritize national interests, good governance, economic growth and social development.

Mwinyi, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) candidate, topped the field of ten opposition candidates. Voter turnout across Zanzibar’s semi‑autonomous islands hit over 88 %, showing a strong public engagement with the electoral process. The Zanzibar Electoral Commission confirmed his lead when it declared him the winner on Thursday night.

Standing beside his first lady, Mariam Mwinyi, the president urged opposition leaders to move past old divisions and work together in protecting the country’s future. “Let us forget the past and open a new chapter of rebuilding the archipelago,” he said.

He will now serve another five‑year term as President of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government. Mwinyi brings a long track record in public service. He started his career in 2000 as a minister in various portfolios, capped by a decade as Minister of Defence and National Service. Born in Zanzibar, he earned a medicine degree from Turkey’s University of Marmara and specialised in internal medicine at King’s College in London. Before entering politics, he worked in hospitals in the UK and Tanzania, and taught as a senior lecturer at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University Medical School.

The new term will see the president and his administration tackle issues ranging from economic reforms to social welfare, aiming to strengthen Zanzibar’s position within the wider Tanzanian framework.
