Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki is wasting no time tackling the fallout from the recent Gen Z protests. On Sunday, she stressed that every criminal act during the unrest must face a full investigation, with the truth out in the open and culprits held accountable. Local media like The Kathmandu Post captured her strong words as she stepped into office.
Earlier that day, Karki made a heartfelt announcement: the protesters who lost their lives in the Gen Z protests will now be honored as martyrs. Each affected family will get Rs 1 million in compensation to help them through this tough time. “We need unity to move Nepal forward,” she told reporters. “Everyone must pull together for the greater good.”
Karki didn’t hold back on the chaos either. She described the rapid shift in just 27 hours of protests as shocking and hinted at a possible conspiracy behind the planned-looking violence. “I didn’t seek this role—I stepped up because you all asked me to,” she shared openly.
The vandalism hit hard, targeting major spots like Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, the Supreme Court, business hubs, and even private properties. Karki promised a thorough probe into all of it. Her focus? Getting Nepal’s shaky economy back on track with a positive vibe.
One of her top priorities was quick relief for victims of last week’s violent clashes. Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal backed this up, confirming the martyr status and Rs 1 million aid for families of the deceased. The government is also providing free medical care to 134 injured protesters and 57 hurt police officers.
Ministries got orders to compile detailed reports on the protest damages right away. Sadly, the unrest has been deadly, claiming 72 lives so far—59 demonstrators, 10 inmates, and three police officers, as reported by The Himalayan Times.
As Nepal navigates this crisis, Karki’s leadership aims to bring healing and answers amid the Gen Z protests aftermath.
