The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed Monday that an airstrike took out the deputy commander of Hamas’s naval police in Gaza. The target, identified only as Yousef, played a key role in the deadly October 7 raid and massacre by Hamas militants.
According to the IDF, Yousef helped plan ambushes on Israeli troops during clashes in the Gaza Strip. He also worked to protect Hamas’s assets across the area. “His death hits Hamas’s maritime police hard,” the IDF stated. “These units gather intelligence on our forces and enforce sea control for the group’s military arm.”
This strike comes as part of Operation Gideon Chariots II, where the Israeli Navy teams up with ground troops and the air force to dismantle Hamas’s naval infrastructure and target top figures. The effort focuses on real-time coordination to close in on threats quickly.
The Navy’s 916th Squadron plays a big part in these ground operations, offering fire support from the sea and helping seal off areas from multiple directions—sea, air, and land. In this case, the Navy shared key intelligence that guided the Israeli Air Force to a precise hit in Gaza’s Central Camps.
On a related note, as Rosh Hashanah approaches, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir shared a heartfelt message with troops across all fronts. “A whole nation thanks you,” he said. “Because of your sacrifice and dedication, we’ll gather tonight for the holiday with a real sense of security and deep gratitude.”
