The United States plans to share key intelligence with Ukraine, helping the country launch missile strikes on Russia’s vital energy infrastructure, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing sources. This move comes as President Trump approves passing along targeting data while his administration considers supplying advanced weapons to Kyiv.
The intelligence from the Pentagon and U.S. spy agencies will zero in on oil refineries, pipelines, and other key assets that fund Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine. By hitting these targets, Ukraine could disrupt Russia’s cash flow and resources needed to keep the conflict going.
U.S. officials are urging NATO allies to offer similar intelligence support to Ukraine. On the weapons front, the U.S. is eyeing Tomahawk cruise missiles and Barracuda munitions, but no final call has been made yet.
Russia isn’t staying quiet. Vasily Nebenzya, Moscow’s top diplomat at the United Nations, warned on October 1 that supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would prompt a strong response from Russia, per TASS news agency. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov added this week that the Tomahawk issue remains undecided, but even if they arrive, they won’t shift the war’s balance, according to Russian state media.
The push for these weapons gained steam last week when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly asked Trump directly for Tomahawk missiles during a private meeting, sources told the New York Post. Trump seemed open to the idea.
These Tomahawk cruise missiles pack a punch, with a range of up to 1,500 miles—enough to reach deep into Russia, including Moscow from Ukrainian territory.
Trump’s stance on the war has toughened lately. Last week, he labeled Russia a “paper tiger” after reviewing fresh U.S. intelligence showing the Kremlin’s economy crumbling and its forces facing defeat in Ukraine. For the first time, Trump voiced confidence that Ukraine’s military could reclaim all its pre-invasion land, the New York Post reported.
