Delhi CM relaxes norms for compassionate employment to kin of 1984 riot victims

In a recent cabinet meeting held in New Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a new policy that will bring jobs to the families of people who died in the 1984 anti‑Sikh riots. The Delhi government wants to give these families both money and dignity.

Gupta said the goal is simple: stop any more delays for families who are still waiting for help. By giving jobs to the next generation, the government hopes to lift their economic situation and restore their pride.

The decision follows a long‑standing promise. Back in 2007, Delhi agreed to offer employment support to relatives of the riot victims, but paperwork and bureaucracy stalled the effort for 18 years. Now the chief minister has set a clear, time‑bound plan to finish the process quickly.

Key points of the new policy include:
– If a qualifying family member is over 50 and not able to work, the family can nominate a younger relative—son, daughter, daughter‑in‑law, or son‑in‑law—to take the job.
– Age and education requirements have been relaxed so that more people can qualify.
– All rules will follow Delhi High Court guidance and the state’s legal framework.
– A transparent system will handle verification, complaints, and staffing to keep appointments fair and efficient.

Gupta called the move a “deep empathy” for the victim families and a promise that Delhi will stand with them for justice and financial relief.

This policy marks a tangible step toward ending the four‑decade‑long wait for support that many Sikh families have endured.
