Trump reiterates claim of ending India-Pakistan conflict in UN address

US President Donald Trump took the stage at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, once again claiming he single-handedly ended the India-Pakistan conflict. But New Delhi quickly pushed back, saying it had nothing to do with him.

In a wide-ranging speech to world leaders, Trump boasted about stopping seven major wars. “I ended seven wars, and in all cases, they were raging, with countless thousands of people being killed,” he said. He specifically pointed to the “violent war that was Pakistan and India.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the record straight during a June phone call with Trump. Modi explained that India and Pakistan resolved the issue on their own. According to India, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations, Major General Kashif Abdullah, reached out directly to his Indian counterpart, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, to propose a truce. No US involvement needed.

Trump also touted his role in ending the Israel-Iran conflict, even though tensions there remain high with no formal peace agreement in sight. He didn’t stop there—he turned his fire on the United Nations itself, accusing the organization of failing to prevent global wars. “It’s too bad that I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them,” Trump said. “And sadly, in all cases, the United Nations did not even try to help.”

Shifting gears to the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump accused India and China of helping fund Moscow’s efforts. He noted that he’s already slapped a 25% tariff on India as punishment. Now, he’s warning NATO allies and the European Union: step up or face the consequences. “Inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products,” he complained. “Think of it, they’re funding the war against themselves.”

Trump promised tough new tariffs from the US if Russia doesn’t agree to end the fighting. “In the event that Russia is not ready to make a deal to end the war, then the United States is fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs, which would stop the bloodshed, I believe, very quickly,” he said. But he made it clear: for these measures to work, European nations must join in and adopt the same steps.

Throughout his address, Trump hammered the UN for its “inefficiencies” in maintaining world peace. To drive the point home, his speech went off-script when the teleprompter malfunctioned, turning much of it into an impromptu rant. Even the escalator at the venue broke down midway, adding to the chaos.

Trump wrapped up by repeating his frustration over not winning the Nobel Peace Prize, despite what he sees as his peacemaking wins.
