EAM Jaishankar hosts high-level meeting to strengthen Global South collaboration at UNGA

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar brought together leaders from like-minded Global South countries for a key meeting in New York. The event happened on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA80, aiming to boost collaboration, solidarity, and multilateral engagement among developing nations.

The discussions zeroed in on pressing global challenges like climate justice, digital technology, and the push for reforms in international systems. Developing countries are increasingly united in wanting to shape world talks to match their real needs.

In a post on X, Jaishankar stressed how multilateralism offers the best way forward. “In the face of the proliferation of concerns and the multiplicity of risks, it is natural that the Global South turn to multilateralism for solutions,” he wrote.

Jaishankar shared fresh ideas to strengthen South-South cooperation. He suggested using existing forums for better consultations among Global South nations to build solidarity and teamwork. He also urged countries to share their unique strengths—think vaccines, digital tools, education programs, farming techniques, and small business know-how—to help each other grow.

On climate change, Jaishankar called for actions that put the Global South first, not just defend the Global North’s position. He highlighted the potential of new technologies like AI and pushed for reforms to the UN and broader multilateral setup.

Beyond the main meeting, Jaishankar had several productive chats with fellow foreign ministers. He caught up with Singapore’s Vivian Balakrishnan for a quick talk during the event. “Quick chat with my friend FM @VivianBala of Singapore,” Jaishankar posted on X.

He also enjoyed a warm discussion with St. Lucia’s Alva Baptiste. “A great conversation with FM Alva Baptiste of St. Lucia today. Always enjoy his company,” Jaishankar shared.

Jaishankar met Mauritius Foreign Minister Ritish Ramful to follow up on Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s recent successful state visit to India. “Pleased to meet FM @RitishRamful of Mauritius today in New York. Discussed following up on the recent successful State Visit of PM @Ramgoolam_Dr to India,” he noted on X.

Finally, Jaishankar wrapped up with a meeting alongside Netherlands Foreign Minister David van Weel. “Appreciated the meeting with FM David van Weel of the Netherlands this evening in New York. An insightful conversation on European strategic positioning and India approach,” Jaishankar posted.

These engagements show India’s active role in Global South diplomacy and building stronger ties worldwide.
