President Donald Trump said he will take part in a historic signing between Thailand and Cambodia as soon as he lands in Malaysia for the ASEAN summit. The U.S. leader posted the news on Truth Social from aboard Air Force One, noting that the deal was “great” and that he had helped broker it.
Trump also sent condolences to Thailand after the country’s Queen Mother, Sirikit, passed away at 93. “I will be seeing Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul when we land,” he wrote, promising to sign the peace agreement the moment the flight touched down.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul had delayed his travel to the ASEAN meeting because of the queen mother’s death. He told reporters that he had requested the signing be moved up to the next morning so he could be present for the event with Trump and Malaysian leaders.
The peace agreement follows a July flare‑up that killed more than 40 people and left about 300,000 residents displaced. After a five‑day ceasefire—partly brokered by Trump—both sides have repeatedly accused each other of breaching the truce.
The two nations also agreed in early October to accelerate work on demarcating their shared border, a step aimed at avoiding future clashes. The Joint Commission on Demarcation held meetings in Chanthaburi, Thailand, and Bangkok to outline the process.
Malaysia’s foreign minister, Mohamad Hasan, confirmed that the signing ceremony would occur at the ASEAN summit. The event is seen as a major step toward regional stability in Southeast Asia.
