Trump warns Hamas will be ‘eradicated’ if it violates Gaza truce, UN urges calm

Trump warned last week that Hamas would be “eradicated” if it violates the Gaza cease‑fire, sparking a sharp response from the United Nations. The former president’s statement comes amid a tense standoff in the region, with Israel continuing assaults on Gaza and Hamas conducting rocket attacks into Israel.

In a tweet, Trump said that any move by Hamas to break the truce would be met with “extreme” action. “Hamas will be eradicated if they break the truce,” the president wrote. The post immediately prompted criticism from many world leaders, who urged restraint.

The United Nations has also stepped in, issuing a call for calm and emphasizing that the Gaza truce—an agreement brokered by Egypt and Qatar—must be respected by all sides. “Violations of the cease‑fire will lead to further loss of life,” the UN said in a statement. The security council has repeatedly warned that any new assault could pull the entire region into a larger conflict.

Israel’s military, meanwhile, has said it will keep up pressure on Hamas until the group complies with the truce. Neveh-Jordan, a senior official with the U.S. State Department, told reporters that Washington continues to support Israel’s right to defend itself, but that any escalation could “heighten regional instability.”

The Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, has seen over 30,000 casualties in the current round of fighting, according to health authorities. The truce, if maintained, could save thousands of lives—but both Hamas and Israel have signed off on it only for short, monitored periods.

Analysts say that Trump’s statement reflects growing pressure from hard‑line supporters who want a decisive outcome. However, most diplomatic actors emphasize that a lasting solution will only come from a negotiated cease‑fire and long‑term peace talks.

In short, while Trump signals a “no‑tolerance” stance toward any truce breach, the UN urges calm and stresses the humanitarian costs of renewed fighting. The situation remains fluid, and the next few days will be critical for whether the Gaza truce holds or if a full‑scale escalation unfolds.
