WASHINGTON, Oct 23 – U.S. President Donald Trump sent a heartfelt letter of condolence to former Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, after the ambassador’s brother, Jasjit Singh Samundri, died on September 30. The note, written on Oct 17, praised Jasjit as a respected public servant and reminded Sandhu of his role in making Trump’s 2020 visit to India a success. Trump ended the message with prayers for comfort and a blessing for Sandhu’s family.
Sandhu, a veteran diplomat who served as India’s ambassador from 2020 to 2024, shared the letter on X (formerly Twitter). “Thank you, President Trump @POTUS, for your condolences. My family and I are deeply honored and touched by your kind gesture,” he wrote.
Political observers welcomed the presidential outreach. Christopher Clary, a political‑science professor at the University at Albany, called the gesture “kudos to whoever,” praising the United States’ diplomatic tone.
The letter became public after a special Diwali event at the White House, where Trump described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great person.” Trump lit a diya lantern in the Oval Office, referring to it as a symbol of hope. The celebration was attended by the current Indian ambassador in India, Vinay Kwatra, U.S. ambassador‑designate to India Sergio Gor, FBI Director Kash Patel, National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, and business leaders of the Indian diaspora.
The gesture comes as India‑U.S. ties ease after months of tension, with trade talks now focused on finalizing the first tranche of a new agreement. Despite past disagreements, the two countries remain close partners, and President Trump’s letter underscores a growing goodwill between them.
