Afghan police in the northern Balkh province eliminated two armed robbers during a nighttime shoot‑out, confiscating four AK‑47 rifles in the process, the provincial police office said on Friday.
The incident happened late Thursday night in Chahi district when the robbers ambushed a passenger car, stealing everything from the vehicles’ occupants. Victims immediately called the police, allowing officers to respond quickly, the agency reported.
When officers tried to arrest the suspects, the robbers opened fire. A brief firefight ensued, ending with both men dead. Police searched the robbers’ gear and found four Kalashnikov assault rifles—two owned by the attackers and two taken from security forces earlier.
A separate clash in neighboring Sari Pul province on Wednesday also ended with a police shoot‑out in which another armed robber was killed. No one else was hurt in either incident.
In related news, provincial police spokesman Mullah Ezatullah Haqqani said that since October 6, security forces have seized almost 400 pieces of firearms and military gear during operations in Helmand province. The haul included 41 Kalashnikov stocks, 188 pistols, an RPG‑7, two M‑16 stocks, more than 170 other weapons, and thousands of rounds. Police also detained 75 people charged with illegally owning or carrying weapons.
Since the Taliban regained power more than four years ago, Afghan security agencies have pulled thousands of weapons – from rifles and hand grenades to battle tanks – in a bid to maintain stability. Earlier, on September 14, police reported finding eight hand grenades and firearms in Kapisa province during several operations.
These ongoing efforts highlight Afghanistan’s focus on clearing illegal arms from the streets and securing the country after years of conflict.
