Two more people die due to dengue in Bangladesh, death toll in 2025 crosses 200

Bangladesh has seen two more deaths from dengue fever in the last 24 hours, pushing the total fatalities from this mosquito-borne virus in 2025 to 202. Health officials reported 396 new hospital admissions for dengue symptoms during that time, bringing the year’s overall cases to 48,228.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) shared these updates, according to United News of Bangladesh (UNB). The latest deaths occurred in Chattogram Division and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). New dengue cases popped up across several areas: 96 in Chattogram Division, 90 in Dhaka Division, 87 in Barishal Division, 56 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 52 in DNCC, and 15 in Rajshahi Division. Right now, 2,344 people are getting treatment for dengue in hospitals around the country.

For context, last year in 2024, Bangladesh recorded 575 dengue deaths, along with 101,214 cases and 100,040 recoveries. The year before that, 2023, was even worse, with a record 1,705 lives lost to the virus—the deadliest dengue season on record.

In a positive move to fight back against the outbreak, DNCC launched its Dengue Watch dashboard on September 22. This new digital tool, created through the DNCC Innovation Lab with help from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to track outbreaks in real time and guide quicker responses. It also helps spread awareness about dengue prevention tips, like clearing standing water to stop mosquito breeding.

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz called it a game-changer. “The Dengue Watch dashboard is more than just a tool,” he said. “It’s a step toward turning DNCC into a digitally driven, transparent, and accountable institution. By using innovation, we can connect health, environment, and governance to create a smarter, healthier Dhaka.”

UNDP’s Resident Representative in Bangladesh, Stefan Liller, praised the effort too. “It’s been a privilege for UNDP to back DNCC’s innovation work,” he noted. “The Innovation Lab, set up in 2025 by DNCC and UNDP, is becoming a hub for smart, scalable urban solutions that put people first. The Dengue Watch Dashboard proves what happens when local leaders, data, and fresh ideas team up.”

The launch featured a keynote speech and a panel discussion with experts from DGHS and other partners. Attendees included reps from the health ministry, city corporations, development groups, and even startups.

Dengue is a viral infection spread by bites from infected mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus (DENV). There’s no specific cure, but catching it early and getting good medical care can greatly reduce the risks of severe cases. Staying vigilant with prevention is key, especially in rainy seasons when mosquitoes thrive.
