Haikou, China – The 24th typhoon of the year, Feng Shen, is expected to drift into the eastern South China Sea on Sunday night. Storm‑watch officials say it will grow stronger, potentially reaching severe tropical‑storm or typhoon force, with winds between 30 and 35 m/s (about 67–78 mph).
From Tuesday onward, a cold front moving south will turn the system southwest, sending it toward the waters southeast of Hainan Island. As it passes, the typhoon will slowly weaken. The Hainan Meteorological Bureau issued a Level IV maritime warning at 10:30 am and the province’s disaster‑prevention committee started a Level IV emergency response – the fourth tier in China’s four‑level system, just below the highest Level I.
Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority reported the aftermath of Typhoon Matmo. Heavy rains and flooding on October 10 left 15 people dead and eight injured. More than 225,000 homes were flooded, with 1,500 severely damaged. Floodwaters buried about 24,000 hectares of rice and other crops and killed roughly 587,000 livestock and poultry. The storm also blocked 27 road sections, caused landslides and left about 181,000 households without power. Some telecommunications networks stayed partially down.
Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered ministries and agencies to help local authorities tackle the damage from Typhoon Matmo, according to Vietnam News Agency.
Residents along the coast and inland communities in both China and Vietnam are advised to stay alert, follow local warnings, and prepare for possible power cuts, flooding, and disrupted transport.
