India Post currently operates 1.64 lakh post offices across the country: Minister

New Delhi – On December 10, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia informed Parliament that India Post runs 164 000 post offices nationwide, backed by 278 000 Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS). He praised these volunteers, noting their relentless efforts to conduct business and connect people emotionally across the country.

During the Lok Sabha’s winter session, Scindia highlighted the remarkable progress in India Post’s evolution under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the past eleven years have seen a deliberate push to strengthen the postal service. Over the last three and a half years, 4 903 new post offices were constructed in states affected by Left Wing Extremism, markedly improving the last‑mile link. Another 5 746 offices were approved for unbanked villages, with 5 657—about 97 %—already operational. Altogether, the national network grew by 10 170 branches during this period.

He added that ₹405 crore has been earmarked for building and refurbishing post office structures, including 49 heritage sites that are deemed institutional treasures. Despite these gains, the minister stressed that an additional investment will be necessary to modernise the remaining 25 000 offices that the postal service owns.

Looking ahead, Scindia revealed that India Post is embarking on a comprehensive Business Process Re‑engineering (BPR) initiative. The aim is to overhaul operations and upgrade the first‑mile, middle‑mile and last‑mile delivery systems, making them faster, more customer‑focused and digitally enabled for millions of citizens. The government is also exploring automation and global best practices to position India Post among the world’s leading logistics carriers, reinforcing its commitment to a contemporary, tech‑driven postal network.
