UK PM Starmer says he will publish key witness statements in China spy case

London – UK Prime Minister Rishi Starmer said today that he will release the key witness statements from the China spy case that has been dominating headlines for months. The decision comes after growing pressure from the public and media to see the evidence that the former defence contractor, who is accused of passing sensitive data to a Chinese intelligence agency, could use to prove innocence.

Starmer thanked the police and investigators for their work and confirmed that the government will publish the statements once the court case ends. He said the release will help keep the public informed and reassure that the justice system is operating transparently.

The case, which began in 2023, focused on a former UK military contractor who allegedly shared classified information with China. The UK’s Security Service was called in to investigate, and the police filed charges in late 2023. Critics have argued that the evidence is too sensitive to be made public, while supporters say that transparency is vital for democracy.

“We do not want the public to be left in suspense,” Starmer told reporters. “Every citizen has the right to see what the evidence is and how it is being used.”

The announcement also signals the government’s stance on protecting national security while respecting the right to a fair trial. Analysts note that the release could influence the upcoming hearing, where the court will decide if the witness statements meet the standards of admissible evidence.

Observers say the decision may slow diplomatic tensions between the UK and China, as the Chinese government has quietly expressed concern that the trial could damage bilateral trade relations. Beijing has urged London to handle the situation “with prudence and fairness.”

In the days ahead, lawyers and the defense team will review the statements to craft a rebuttal. The next court session is scheduled for early next month, and both sides hope to resolve the dispute with a focus on legal fairness and public confidence.
