Kyiv, Oct 23 – Ukrainian forces said they hit a Russian military plant and an oil refinery in a coordinated strike. The attack targeted the Saransk Mechanical Plant in Mordovia’s capital, a factory that builds anti‑personnel weapons, mine‑laying kits and ammunition components. The strike triggered explosions, the statement said.
The Saransk plant is owned by the state‑owned Rostec Corporation and is a key supplier for Russia’s defence industry. It had been shut for 90 days in 2020 after safety violations at an explosive‑production site, Russian business paper Kommersant reported.
Russian air defences shot down 44 Ukrainian drones overnight, including eight over Dagestan, but there were no drone losses over Mordovia. Artyom Zdunov, the governor of Mordovia, confirmed that the region endured a large‑scale drone attack that damaged a local business.
Separately, Ukrainian drones struck the Makhachkala oil refinery in Dagestan, damaging a processing unit that supplies fuel to the Caspian Fleet. Makhachkala Mayor Dzhambulat Salavov initially posted on Telegram that the raid damaged several commercial buildings and two vehicles, but he deleted the post after 12 minutes. A photo in the post showed damaged buildings and military vehicles, noting that the strikes aim to curb Russia’s military‑economic capacity.
Ukrainian forces also used UK‑supplied Storm Shadow missiles to hit a chemical plant in Bryansk on Tuesday. The operation involved Ukraine’s Air Force working with the Navy, Land Forces and other units. Storm Shadow attacks have previously targeted Russian facilities in Bryansk, Kursk and occupied Crimea.
These strikes come as Kyiv and Washington continue talks about delivering long‑range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that boosting Ukraine’s long‑range strike power could pressure Russia to seek a diplomatic solution to the war.
