UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged world leaders to ramp up efforts on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during a key event at UN headquarters in New York. The SDG Moment took place amid the High-Level Week of the 80th UN General Assembly session, highlighting the urgent push for global progress.
Guterres laid out a clear roadmap to hit the SDGs by 2030. He stressed the need to overhaul the global financial system, put climate action front and center, and gear up for big changes driven by technology. “In all we do, we must make peace a priority,” he said, pointing out that global military spending in 2024 hit 13 times the amount of official development assistance.
With just five years left until the 2030 deadline, the outlook isn’t great. UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock shared stark numbers: Only 35% of the SDGs are on track, 47% show too little progress, and 18% are sliding backward. She also noted that net official development assistance dropped 7.1% last year, even as global needs keep rising.
“We’re not moving as fast as we should on the core promise of the Sustainable Development Goals,” Baerbock warned. She called for fairer development that amplifies overlooked voices and builds stronger solidarity among nations.
The SDGs form the heart of the UN’s 2030 Agenda, adopted back in September 2015. This blueprint includes 17 goals aimed at wiping out poverty, boosting equality, tackling climate change, and fostering peace and prosperity for everyone by the end of the decade.
