On Dec. 27, the United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres delivered a firm rebuke of the violent blast that struck a mosque in Homs, Syria. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the UN condemned the attack as a blatant act of terrorism carried out during Friday prayers at the Ali Bin Abi Talib mosque in the Wadi al‑Dahab neighborhood.
The Secretary‑General underscored that “attacks against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable,” and urged that those responsible be identified and held accountable. He also added, “The Secretary‑General extends his condolences to the families of those killed and expresses his sympathy to all those injured, wishing them a prompt and full recovery.”
Syria’s health officials confirmed that the death toll has now risen to eight, up from the initial estimate of five fatalities and 21 wounded. Najib al‑Naasan, director of referral, ambulance and emergency services at the Ministry of Health, told state‑run SANA that the numbers were preliminary and that emergency crews were transporting the wounded to nearby hospitals. Security teams quickly cordoned off the area and increased protective measures as investigators worked to determine the cause of the explosion.
The UK‑based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported that the blast occurred inside the mosque, noting that it was not yet clear whether the explosion was the result of a suicide attack. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and intensified calls for a thorough investigation by international bodies.
