UN General Assembly Backs New York Declaration for Peaceful Israel-Palestine Resolution
The United Nations General Assembly made a big move today, voting to support the New York Declaration. This key document pushes for a peaceful end to the Israel-Palestine conflict and a two-state solution. The vote happened on September 13, with 142 countries in favor, just 10 against, and 12 abstaining, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The New York Declaration came out of a high-level UN conference in late July. It lays out clear steps to resolve the longstanding Israel-Palestine tensions and make a two-state solution a reality. France and Saudi Arabia, who co-chaired the event, introduced the resolution, along with leaders from its working groups.
Palestine’s UN observer thanked the nations that voted yes. He urged the side still choosing war and destruction to embrace reason instead. "Peace benefits everyone who supports the two-state solution," he added. It could open doors for Middle East integration, boosting development and cooperation across the region.
France’s representative highlighted the declaration as a straightforward roadmap. Key points include an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and freeing all hostages. It also calls for a viable, sovereign Palestinian state, disarming Hamas and removing it from Gaza’s governance, plus normalizing ties between Israel and Arab nations.
Not everyone agreed, though. The US representative spoke out before the vote, calling the New York Declaration something her country opposes. She labeled the UNGA’s action a "misguided and ill-timed publicity stunt" that hurts real diplomatic work to stop the conflict.
This UN resolution on the two-state solution marks a strong global call for peace in the Israel-Palestine issue, amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the Middle East.
