In Sonipat on Nov. 14, Haryana’s chief minister Nayab Singh Saini opened the state’s 72nd Cooperative Week. The event, part of the “Year of Cooperatives,” highlighted how grouping people and pooling resources can boost rural prosperity and push India toward growth.
Saini reminded attendees that India’s soul lives in its villages. He urged young people to abandon old habits, start cooperatives, and grow them into global brands – especially using Digital India tools. “Millions of Indians have already proven that small savings and teamwork create strong cooperatives,” he said. “As India climbs to become the third‑largest economy, cooperatives must help.” He pointed out that the national government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made a new Ministry of Cooperation in 2014 to support this vision.
The state has made visible progress. More than 300,000 farmers now hold RuPay Kisan Credit Cards issued through 19 district‑level cooperative banks. Twenty‑one primary agricultural credit society centres were chosen for new warehouses, and the state’s cooperative credit scheme saves members over ₹1,223 crore by waiving interest on on‑time farm‑loan payments. In total, the interest‑free plan has helped 531,652 farmers.
Haryana’s big‑picture plan continues with a mega food park underway in Rohtak, built under the central government’s Mega Food Park Scheme. The project, costing around ₹180 crore, will boost local food processing and export.
Saini’s message was clear: cooperative action, backed by technology and government support, can turn small local efforts into powerful engines of development.
