UN relief chief urges Israel to open Gaza border crossings

The United Nations has called on Israel to open its border crossings into Gaza so that people can receive the help they desperately need. UN relief chief, Kurt Rebmann, said that keeping the gates shut blocks essential supplies like food, medicine and water.

Rebmann travelled to the region this week and met with Israeli officials. He said the urgency is clear: thousands of civilians are stranded, and the humanitarian situation is worsening. “If we block the crossings, we block aid,” the chief told reporters. He urged the Israeli government to allow UN personnel and supplies to move freely into the Gaza Strip.

The call comes amid rising tensions between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza. Conflicts have stalled reconstruction and left many families without basic services. Health workers say that without fresh supplies, hospitals risk running out of lifesaving drugs and oxygen.

Israel, for its part, has said it will open crossings if it can ensure security. The country wants guarantees that aid will not be used by Hamas to equip fighters. “We’re open to cooperation,” a spokesperson said, stressing the need for safeguards.

International donors and aid agencies have joined the UN’s plea. They argue that a temporary relaxation of access could save lives and help build trust between the two sides. The Israeli government had earlier opened a small checkpoint near the town of Rafah, but critics say it is too limited to meet the urgent needs.

While the UN hopes to increase the flow of humanitarian aid, the path remains complicated. Negotiations are ongoing, and the next few days will be critical to determine whether the crossings will remain closed or begin to open. The world is watching closely, as the situation could have lasting effects on the region’s stability and the wellbeing of millions of civilians in Gaza.
