Prince Harry’s recent four‑day trip back to the UK was marred by a scary encounter with a woman who has a long‑standing fixation on the Duke of Sussex. The woman, whose name is still undisclosed, showed up twice in close proximity to Harry during public events, raising fresh concerns about his safety and the need for better security.
The first incident happened on September 9, when Harry was speaking at the WellChild Awards at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. A security guard noticed the woman at a location called a “secure zone.” Though no police officer was present, a staffer from Harry’s inner circle identified her as the same woman who had followed the Duke to Nigeria in May and blocked her from getting close.
Two days later, the woman appeared near Harry at the Centre for Blast Injury Studies in west London, the centre of the authoring of his best‑selling book Spare. She is believed to suffer from mental‑health issues, but her presence caused a stir because she had a history of following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex around the world.
The UK government had cut Harry and Meghan’s taxpayer‑funded security earlier this year, after the couple launched a legal challenge against the Crown. That left little police presence at the events, and so the responsibility to keep Harry safe fell to a small team from his private office. One security source told the Post that while “these incidents are not uncommon for royals,” relying on luck is not a long‑term solution. “The Duke is the son of the king, the brother of the heir, fifth in line, and one of the most famous people worldwide,” the source added.
Security teams worked with a private intelligence firm to add the woman to a list of “fixated” individuals. The Post was told that the list was designed to prevent similar incidents in the future. He also said the Eye around the royal family “feels like a looming threat that may only be addressed by the Home Office and the RAVEC board after a serious incident.”
During his UK visit, Harry also met his estranged father, King Charles, reportedly for a “peace‑talk.” The two had not spoken in months, after the Duke said he was “unjustically” singled out for inferior treatment when the family lost their publicly funded security. The period of estrangement began after Harry’s court case against the UK government, which India’s public segments made headlines. He told the BBC that his father “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff,” even though he “would love to reconcile.”
Prince Harry has said that life is precious and he worries about how long his father will have left, especially after King Charles was diagnosed with cancer last year. Prince William was notably absent from the reunion; the brothers have not spoken in years.
The incidents underscore the growing need for better protection for royals in the age of social media and the internet. With no police presence at a high‑profile event, the private office’s inability to control the woman’s access has raised questions about the adequacy of the current security arrangements. The Home Office and Scotland Yard have been asked for comment.
Whether or not more formal policies will change soon remains to be seen, but the incidents have renewed debate over how best to keep the royal family safe from people who may be fixated or pose a threat.
