British Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the right to peaceful protests after a huge anti-immigration march brought over 100,000 people to the streets of London on Saturday. But he drew a firm line against any violence, especially attacks on police officers.
The event, organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, saw around 110,000 demonstrators waving English flags in red and white, along with the Union Jack. Police reported a chaotic scene: 26 officers got injured from kicks, punches, and thrown bottles, leading to 25 arrests so far, with more likely on the way. The crowd grew so large that it spilled beyond the approved route, catching authorities off guard.
Speaking on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Starmer stressed the importance of free expression. “People have a right to peaceful protest. It is core to our country’s values,” he said. Yet, he slammed the ugly side of the rally. “But we will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin.”
Starmer also highlighted Britain’s strengths amid the tension. “Britain is a nation proudly built on tolerance, diversity and respect. Our flag represents our diverse country and we will never surrender it to those that use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division.”
This massive anti-immigration protest comes as immigration tops the UK’s political agenda, pushing aside worries about the shaky economy. The country grapples with a record surge in asylum claims, including over 28,000 migrants arriving by small boats across the English Channel this year alone. These boat crossings have fueled heated debates on UK immigration policy and border control.
As tensions rise, Starmer’s words aim to balance free speech with public safety in a nation facing its biggest immigration challenges yet.
