Johannesburg, Dec 2 (LatestNewsX) – Tensions between Washington and Pretoria are on the rise, and the report urged potential back‑stops such as Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, the UK and South Korea to intervene. If they fail to do so, the G20 could fracture along a North‑South line.
The United States, which will chair the next G20 summit and is the only member not slated for the 2025 Johannesburg meeting, said on Nov. 27 that it would not extend an invitation to South Africa’s President for the Miami gathering. That move provoked hurt and indignation, raising doubts about the G20’s near‑future stability.
A study by the Indian think‑tank Politeia Research Foundation noted that, as emerging economies increasingly shape global platforms, the back‑to‑back G20 presidencies of Indonesia, India, Brazil and South Africa underscored the forum’s evolution into a more inclusive and balanced body.
During India’s 2022‑23 presidency, the alliance gave full membership to the African Union and hosted Voice of Global South Summits—steps that pushed the G20 toward a Southern tilt, peaking under South Africa’s leadership.
“In handling its G20 presidency so well, and having a leader who has attended every summit since 2014, India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi attracted considerable diplomatic and media attention in Johannesburg,” wrote Rajiv Bhatia, a former ambassador who served in Myanmar, Mexico, Kenya and South Africa.
Prime Minister Modi repeatedly highlighted the flaws of the current global development model and called for a redefinition of “the parameters of development,” proposing that it could be achieved by following “the pathway of Integral Humanism.” He also pushed for a stronger Global South voice in worldwide governance, outlining a three‑point agenda that included sustainable development, trusted trade and inclusive prosperity.
India’s impact was clearly seen in the increased confidence of African nations at the recently concluded G20 summit in South Africa. Analysts and delegates agreed that India’s imprint on the outcomes was unmistakable, according to a report in South Africa’s leading media outlet, ‘Independent Online’ (IOL).
“From debt reform to digital public infrastructure, many priorities highlighted at the Johannesburg meetings trace continuity from India’s 2023 presidency and signal the rising weight of the Global South in shaping global governance,” the report noted.
