The U.S. State Department said it is closely watching the situation after a large explosion hit cars near Delhi’s famous Red Fort Metro Station last night. The agency also offered consular help to U.S. citizens in India.
A State Department spokesperson told : “We are aware of the explosion near Red Fort in Delhi. We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide consular assistance.” In a separate post on X, the bureau for South and Central Asian Affairs shared, “Our hearts are with those affected by the terrible explosion in New Delhi. We continue to monitor the situation. Our sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.”
The blast tore through parked cars in a busy Old Delhi area and set several vehicles ablaze. At least ten people were killed and about a dozen were hurt, with the injured taken to LNJP Hospital for treatment. Police, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the National Security Guard (NSG) and forensic teams reached the scene quickly, and the area has been sealed off while investigators review CCTV footage to find the culprit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and urged a quick recovery for the wounded. He and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation together. Home Minister Shah visited LNJP Hospital and called on security agencies for a detailed report.
In response to the incident, authorities raised security alerts across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Mumbai. Extra patrols and heightened security are now in place at crowded public sites and places of worship.
This incident highlights the growing concern over safety in India’s major cities, and the international community is keeping a close eye on how the local authorities handle the investigation and public safety.
