A group of bipartisan U.S. lawmakers has written a direct letter to former President Donald Trump, urging him to join three important meetings in Asia this fall. The letter, led by Representative Gregory Meeks, the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, calls on Trump to attend the East Asia Summit in Malaysia, the APEC Summit in South Korea and a Quad Leaders’ Summit in India.
The signatories include Republican Ami Bera, Representative Bill Huizenga and Representative Sydney Kamlager‑Dove on the House’s South and Central Asia Subcommittee, as well as Democrat Young Kim on the East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee. They stress that the Indo‑Pacific region is key to America’s security and prosperity, and that Chinese influence is expanding rapidly there.
“We need President Trump’s presence to show U.S. leadership and counter China’s ambitions,” the letter says. It also labels the Quad partnership—U.S., Australia, Japan and India—as the cornerstone for advancing shared interests in the Indo‑Pacific.
Earlier this week, Representative Kamlager‑Dove introduced an amendment to the Department of State Policy Provisions Act that specifically asks Trump to lead the Quad and attend the upcoming summit. The amendment passed by voice vote and has moved to the House floor for a final vote.
In an interview the week before, Kamlager‑Dove emphasized that the Quad Summit is “incredibly important” and called for unity with Indo‑Pacific allies. Trump was slated to attend the November summit in India, but the event may shift to early next year.
The lawmakers also referenced a separate letter from 19 congressional members urging Trump to reset the India‑U.S. partnership. They cited his administration’s tariff hikes on Indian goods—reaching as high as 50%—and warned that such steps harm both U.S. consumers and manufacturers while straining ties with the world’s largest democracy.
The bipartisan letter remains a clear call: U.S. leadership, a free and open Indo‑Pacific, and a reset of the India‑U.S. partnership hinge on President Trump’s active participation in these key Asian summits.
