On Monday afternoon a San Francisco cable car came to an abrupt screech‑halt, sending passengers into a chaotic tumble that left more than a dozen people hurt.
The San Francisco Fire Department reported that 15 people sustained injuries ranging from mild to moderate—two of them were taken to the hospital with more serious cuts, 11 were treated on the scene for minor aches, and two declined medical help.
Fire officials suggested that an object might have been hurled at the vehicle, causing it to stop suddenly, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed. Photographs of the aftermath show several windows completely shattered, and footage posted by responders captures ambulances crowded around the overturned car.
“Safety for our passengers on all Muni vehicles continues to be our top priority. We’ll be conducting a full review of incident details to ensure continued safety on the cable cars,” the SFMTA said in a statement. Investigations are now being carried out by the SFFD and the SFMTA.
