A single‑vehicle collision on the I‑10 Freeway in San Bernardino County on Oct. 21, 2025, turned into a deadly multi‑vehicle pile‑up. The crash, captured on dash‑cam footage, killed three people and left several others injured.
Police say a 21‑year‑old driver from India, Jashanpreet Singh, failed to brake and collided with slow‑moving traffic while intoxicated. A toxicology test found alcohol in his system. Law enforcement has charged Singh with gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence and has placed an immigration detainer on him. He is not in legal U.S. status and has previously been released by federal agents after crossing the southern border in 2022.
Two of the victims who died on the scene were identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner: 76‑year‑old Clarence Nelson and his 69‑year‑old wife, Lisa. Nelson was an assistant basketball coach for Pomona High School in Pomona, California. State Sen. Susan Rubio, who represents the district, expressed deep sorrow and shared that the loss has rippled through the school community. The Pomona Unified School District has declined to comment.
The incident follows similar cases involving undocumented truck drivers. Earlier this year, Harjinder Singh, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018, was accused of causing a fatal crash in Fort Pierce, Florida. He had previously passed a commercial driving test in California but reportedly failed English‑language and road‑sign exams.
The crash also comes amid a federal decision that will cut more than $40 million in highway safety funding from California. The cut, announced by the Trump administration last week, is tied to the state’s failure to meet federal English‑proficiency standards for commercial truck drivers.
This accident underscores the growing concerns about truck‑driver safety and immigration enforcement on U.S. highways.
