Ex-J&K DGP criticises National Conference MLA for remarks related to national emblem

A heated debate erupted in Srinagar over a recent incident at the Hazratbal shrine, highlighting tensions around religious symbols and national pride. The controversy began after some miscreants vandalized a newly installed inauguration stone that featured the national emblem, sparking strong reactions from community leaders and officials.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief S.P. Vaid sharply criticized a statement made by NC MLA and party spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq. Tanvir had expressed concern on social media, saying, “Placing a sculpted figure at the Hazratbal Dargah goes against Islamic beliefs. In Islam, idol worship is strictly forbidden, and sacred spaces should reflect only the pure message of Tawheed.”

S.P. Vaid responded firmly, warning Tanvir to choose his words carefully. He explained, “The National Emblem is part of India’s Constitution. It represents the rights we all enjoy. There’s no idol worship involved—it’s a symbol of the nation, and twisting its meaning only spreads misunderstanding and fuels radicalism in Kashmir.”

Meanwhile, Darakhshan Andrabi, chairperson of the Waqf Board, held a press conference condemning those responsible for vandalizing the inauguration stone. She demanded strict action against those who damaged the monument with stones earlier that day outside the Hazratbal shrine. The stone had been installed just two days earlier, coinciding with the recent renovation of the shrine, which was funded entirely by the Waqf Board’s own resources.

On the same day, thousands of devout Muslims gathered at the Hazratbal shrine to observe Eid-e-Milad, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. This annual event is the biggest gathering of Muslims at the shrine, marking a day of prayer and spiritual reflection.

The incident at Hazratbal has sparked discussions across Kashmir about religious sensitivity, national symbols, and the importance of maintaining harmony during major religious events. Authorities have promised to take strict action against those responsible for damaging the inauguration stone and to ensure peace during upcoming religious gatherings.
