False Alert Sends Ripples of Alarm from Nevada to California
An emergency notification warning of a 5.9‑magnitude quake in the Reno, Nevada area caused a surge of anxiety among Californians, yet the tremor never actually struck.
The alarm was pushed to residents via the My Shake app at 8:06 a.m. Thursday, broadcasting the news across a broad swath of the West Coast.
Within minutes of the alert, officials issued a statement confirming it was a mistake. “The ShakeAlert system released an incorrect alert for a magnitude 5.9 earthquake near Reno and Carson City, Nevada. The event did not occur, and has been deleted from USGS websites and data feeds. The USGS is working to understand the cause of the false alert,” the USGS posted on its site.
USGS officials are investigating the triggers behind this erroneous notification and promise to share more details as findings emerge.
