Alex Murdaugh, the once‑prominent South Carolina lawyer now serving two lifetime sentences, has blasted a new Hulu drama for “sensationalizing” the brutal killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul. The eight‑part series, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, follows the events before and after the shotgun deaths that shook the Lowcountry.
The show aims to dramatize the murder case that left the Murdaugh family in disarray. Prosecutors charged the disgraced attorney with murdering Maggie and Paul and, weeks later, with fraud and embezzlement that spanned years. In March 2023 a jury convicted him of double murder, and in June 2023 he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He now serves additional years for financial crimes at a South Carolina maximum‑security prison.
Murdaugh’s attorneys issued a statement on Friday, saying the Hulu series misrepresents the facts and portrays the family dynamics inaccurately. “We are deeply disappointed and disturbed by the recent Hulu streaming series about him and the entire Murdaugh family,” the statement read. It added that the program “contains numerous inaccuracies and misleading portrayals that distort the truth of their lives.”
The claim points out that the producers never consulted Murdaugh’s legal team or family members. “No one from Hulu ever reached out to Alex, his son Buster, anyone in the Murdaugh family or Alex’s attorneys to hear their perspective or verify the facts,” the statement said. Instead, the series allegedly relies on “sensationalized accounts from secondary sources with no direct knowledge or relationship.”
While the defense team condemns the drama, Hulu has yet to respond to a request for comment. The show stars Patricia Arquette as the grieving wife and Jason Clarke as the accused lawyer. It has quickly become a talk‑point in true‑crime circles, drawing viewers who want to see how the high‑profile case unfolded in celluloid.
Fox News Digital’s reporter learned from former South Carolina attorney Mark Tinsley that many witnesses and community members struggle to reconcile the public image of Murdaugh with his actions. “I think it’s often hard for people to compartmentalize what we think and the person we think we knew,” Tinsley said. “There’s probably a group of people that still find it hard to believe that the facade the people saw wasn’t real.”
The Murdaugh case has raised questions about legal ethics, financial improprieties, and a toxic culture that enabled a notorious lawyer’s crimes. It also highlights the importance of accuracy in dramatizations. The defense team has urged viewers to approach the Hulu series with a skeptical mind, reminding them it is not an accurate portrayal of Alex Murdaugh, his family, or the tragic events that the show sensationalizes.
As the series continues to attract audiences interested in true‑crime stories, Murdaugh’s criticism underscores how the portrayal of real crimes can shape public perception—especially when the facts are contested and defendants fight to protect their reputations while behind bars.
