India make history with a brilliant victory over South Africa for maiden Women’s World Cup title

In Navi Mumbai on Sunday, India’s women clinched their first ever Women’s ODI World Cup title, beating South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium.
Indian all‑rounder Deepti Sharma was the star. She scored 58 runs and then took a superb 5‑for‑39, finishing with a match‑winning 5‑2‑39. India reached 298 for 7 in 50 overs, thanks to a steady 87 from Shafali Verma and a 34 from Richa Ghosh.
South Africa fought on. Captain Laura Wolvaardt hit 101 off 95 balls, scooping 11 fours and a six, while Annerie Dercksen added 35. They were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs.
Sharma’s bowling dominated the chase. She broke the partnership between Wolvaardt and Dercksen with a tight yorker, then the next delivery took the wicket of Chloe Tryon for nine. The Indians closed the game quickly, bowling the Proteas out in 45.3 overs and sealing history‑making victory.
India’s win makes it only the third nation to win both the men’s and women’s ODI World Cups, joining England and Australia. The match was highlighted by India’s resilience after a rough start, and the warm reception the players received in the packed stadium.
