US Senator Lindsey Graham Calls Charlie Kirk Shooting an Attack on Trump’s Political Movement
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina has strong words about the tragic shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Graham called it a direct hit on a political movement, not just one man. "I see this as an attack on a political movement," he told host Kristen Welker. He added that Kirk was one of the top figures who helped President Trump win the 2024 election through his grassroots efforts. Graham believes Trump views this as an assault on the entire MAGA movement that the president built.
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a key Trump ally, was shot dead on Wednesday at an event in Utah Valley University. The suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, was arrested by the FBI late Thursday. Kirk played a huge role in mobilizing supporters for Trump’s 2024 campaign, making him a big name in conservative circles.
President Trump didn’t hold back either. In a Thursday speech, he pointed fingers at the "radical left" for the shooting. Speaking to NBC News on Saturday, Trump said such groups are blocking efforts to bring the country together. He’s often highlighted political violence, like the two assassination attempts on him last year, the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and attacks on figures like Rep. Steve Scalise, Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, congressional aide Zack Barth, and lobbyist Matt Mika.
That said, Trump hasn’t said as much about violence against Democrats. Recent examples include the arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s home, the foiled kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the 2022 assault on Paul Pelosi, and the chaotic January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.
Utah voter records list Robinson as unaffiliated with any party. But Republican Governor Spencer Cox noted on Friday that the suspect had gotten more political in the days leading up to the shooting.
Leaders from both sides of the aisle have condemned Kirk’s killing. Graham urged everyone to fight political battles with words, not weapons. "Charlie was a symbol of MAGA to so many—young people who felt left out," he said. "He spoke his mind, and not everyone liked it. But killing him is never the answer."
