Student accounts from Brown University paint a harrowing picture of the afternoon’s shooting. Many were still in class when they heard the unmistakable “loud bangs,” after which a frantic rush for cover erupted. A student named Martyna Kaps told the Brown Daily Herald that she had just left a review session in the Barus & Holley Engineering building and was startled to hear the gunfire. “There were still people in the classroom,” she said. “From what I heard, many of them dove behind the teacher’s desk and hid there to avoid the bullets,” she added.
Another student, Refath Bari GS, was descending the stairs of the Engineering Research Center when the same blaring gunshots began. “There was confusion and then people started running,” he recounted. “I ran as fast as I could to the other side of the street towards Thayer Street, and then I found a student and went into her apartment,” he said.
Police vehicles arrived at the scene later that evening, with the suspect—described as a man wearing black—still on the loose. The shooter was seen fleeing on foot and has not been apprehended as of Saturday night.
