Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has made it clear she’s not looking “interested in a bromance with the federal regime.” Her statement came just a few days after New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, warmed up to President Trump during a brief Oval Office visit.

The progressive leader—who has championed many of Mamdani’s policy goals—told reporters on Monday that she doesn’t intend to mirror the friendly vibe that accompanied Mamdani’s meeting with Trump. During a Thanksgiving‑day rally, when asked whether she’d welcome a similar invitation, Wu said: “From my point of view, flattery is not the way.” According to the Boston Herald.

She reminded Boston voters that the city’s priorities remain unchanged: standing up for their values, getting things done, and keeping momentum forward. Wu, whose profile has grown since taking office in 2021, has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration and its hard‑line stance on immigration.

Mamdani, who shares many policy overlaps with Wu, described Trump as a “fascist” on the campaign trail. Yet the two were cordial during their brief encounter in the Oval Office. The 34‑year‑old Queens activist avoided praising Trump outright but emphasized that the conversation revolved around ways both could serve New Yorkers.

When reporters pressed Mamdani about earlier jabs at Trump, the president’s office slipped in a defensive beat. The 40‑year‑old elected mayor commented that she would only meet with Trump if the federal government met specific demands: “If it came with a promise to stop snatching residents illegally off the streets, stop prosecuting his political enemies, stop cutting life saving research and funding?” she said, the Boston Globe reported. “Sure, I would be open to a conversation at that point.”

Wu also stressed that each community—including local leaders, universities and law firms—must assess its own unique situation before engaging the White House. She added that she is fighting “as hard as I possibly can to stop the actions of a federal government that seems intent on attacking its own people.”

When Mamdani’s campaign was asked to comment on Wu’s remarks, they cited her comments from Meet the Press: “I think working for the people of New York City demands that you work with everyone and anyone, and that you always look to find those areas of agreement while not overlooking the places of disagreement.”
