By helping Ukraine, Trump can bring about Putin’s day of reckoning

President Donald Trump is ramping up support for Ukraine as it fights Russia’s ongoing invasion. He’s approved sharing U.S. intelligence to help Ukrainian forces target key Russian sites like oil refineries and pipelines. Reports also suggest he’s weighing options to supply long-range Tomahawk and Barracuda cruise missiles, letting Kyiv strike deeper into Russian territory.

At the same time, Ukrainian officials are in Washington hashing out a deal. President Volodymyr Zelensky says it would have the U.S. buy drones straight from Ukraine. This move could boost America’s own drone technology with battle-tested gear, while giving Ukraine cash to keep fighting and pressuring Russia to end the war.

These steps come just days after Trump called Russia a “paper tiger” that Ukraine can defeat. They aim to strengthen ties between Washington and Kyiv, showing unity against the invasion.

Putin’s reaction? He’s signaling he’s not backing down. On Monday, the Russian leader signed a decree to draft 135,000 more men into the army—the biggest fall conscription in nine years. It’s classic saber-rattling, aimed at warning both Ukraine and the U.S. that Moscow plans to fight on.

But what about everyday Russians? Do they really want this war to drag on? Measuring true public sentiment is tough in a country where criticizing the conflict can land you in jail. Still, recent polls paint a clear picture: about two-thirds of Russians now support peace talks, while only 27% back continuing the fight—the lowest level yet.

History offers a warning for Putin. Public backlash helped force the Soviet Union to withdraw from its bloody decade in Afghanistan back in 1989. Russia’s current war has already claimed more lives than that entire conflict.

By bridging gaps between the U.S. and Ukraine—and leaving Putin more isolated—Trump’s actions could push Russia toward a quicker resolution. The question is, how long can Putin ignore his own people’s growing call for peace?
