Florida divorcee, 48, accused of gunning down both of her ex-husbands in same-day fatal shootings
A 48‑year‑old Florida divorcee, Susan Avalon, was taken into custody after allegedly shooting two former husbands on the same day. Police say the first shooting took place in Tampa, where Avalon fired twice at a 54‑year‑old ex‑husband who succumbed to his wounds that evening.
Over 50 miles away in Manatee County, she then travelled to a second home on Frierson Avenue and killed another ex‑husband around 3 p.m. She has been charged with murder and is currently held at the Citrus County Detention Facility.
Authorities report that Avalon has had long‑standing custody battles over her children with both men, along with a backlog of $4,000 in child‑support arrears.
Her live‑in boyfriend claims she recently tracked her ex‑husband’s address, and investigators say she was seen entering a Panera Bread to steal food before heading to the first victim’s house. Surveillance footage captured her walking into the cafe, swiping a food delivery, and then driving to the Tampa home.
When police questioned her about the killings, she chillingly replied, “Which one?” before she was taken aside. “We only know of one,” Sheriff Rick Wells told reporters.
He added that an investigation into a second ex‑husband, whom Avalon had married after the first, revealed the second man lived in Tampa. Wells is now working with prosecutors to strengthen the charge to “first‑degree murder” and pursue a potential death penalty.
The second shooting, which took place at the Frierson Avenue residence, left a man dead with multiple gunshots, and the back door was broken in, suggesting forced entry. Police have not released the identity or age of the second victim, but believe Avalon targeted him first.
A former offender, Avalon had prior child‑abuse charges in Virginia and was previously implicated in two other cases in Tampa and Pasco County that were later dropped.
Though she has been charged with “second‑degree homicide” for the Manatee County killing, she has yet to face charges for the Tampa shooting as investigators continue to pursue the case.
