At the emotional memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, his widow Erika Kirk opened up about a heartfelt conversation that helped her through her grief. She described how second lady Usha Vance stepped in right after Kirk’s shocking assassination, offering words of comfort that felt like a lifeline.
Erika shared that she told Usha she wasn’t sure how she’d cope without her husband, the father of their two young kids. Usha responded with a simple but powerful analogy: those tense final 15 minutes of a bumpy airplane ride, where parents just focus on making it to the landing one moment at a time. “She told me, ‘You will get through these 15 minutes and the next 15 minutes after that,'” Erika recounted in her speech. “Usha, I don’t think you realized it then, but those words were exactly what I needed to hear.” Erika called Usha a “precious woman” for her kindness during such a dark time.
The service drew a huge crowd to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday. Vice President JD Vance, a close friend of Kirk’s, took the stage earlier to deliver a moving tribute. “They tried to silence our dear friend Charlie Kirk,” Vance said. “And tonight, we speak with Charlie and for Charlie, louder than ever.”
Vance highlighted Kirk’s fierce commitment to family values and traditional principles, calling them the bedrock of a strong society. He said Kirk gave young people the truth they need to shape the future and a real voice in it. But Vance emphasized that Kirk’s biggest impact went beyond his words—he lived his beliefs every day. “Charlie did so much more than tell the truth. He lived it,” Vance noted. Kirk’s deep love for history and big ideas fueled his vision for America’s path forward. “In this he showed all of us how to carry on after his death,” Vance wrapped up.
Kirk and Vance shared a tight bond, both personal and political. Many credit Kirk with playing a key role in convincing President Donald Trump to pick Vance as his running mate in the 2024 election. After the assassination, Vance and Usha flew back to Arizona with Erika on Air Force Two, carrying Kirk’s flag-draped casket. In Salt Lake City, Vance walked beside it across the tarmac as honor guards moved it along.
Vance stepped up again to guest host “The Charlie Kirk Show,” Kirk’s popular platform, where he shared more reflections on his friend’s life and tragic end. The memorial underscored Kirk’s lasting influence on the conservative movement and his role in empowering the next generation.
