A 32‑year‑old man in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been charged with murder after a 51‑year‑old guest was shot dead at a Motel 6 on October 10. Police say Ronnie Fewell and two other men stormed the guest room, stayed inside only a few seconds, and the victims was pronounced dead on scene with multiple gunshot wounds.
The arrest affidavit lists the charges as felony murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and felony conspiracy. Detectives say the suspect was one of four people who took part in the attack. An itemized police video shows a backpack containing about $100 of stolen goods left after the escape.
Court and sheriff’s office records show Fewell has been jailed at least 40 times since 2012. The charges range from resisting a public officer and breaking and entering to possession of stolen property, assault on a female, cocaine possession and sale, and firearm offenses. Many of those past accusations were dropped by the state attorney or resulted in no jail time, but he has served prison time for several convictions.
The local prosecutor has not yet set a bail amount. Fewell has been committed to Mecklenburg County’s jail for now.
“Another serial criminal who was walking free in Charlotte, NC, has just been arrested for the murder of a 51‑year‑old man,” Republican state Rep. Mark Harris tweeted, adding that he was “disgusted” by the number of prior arrests.
The case will go before a Mecklenburg County judge on Monday. If convicted, Fewell faces a long prison sentence. Local officials say the police are still looking for the other two men involved.
The incident has raised questions about how repeat offenders move freely in Charlotte and what tougher measures might prevent similar tragedies in the future.
