Three men in Halloween masks rattled a widow’s Alexandria, Virginia, home late on Tuesday night, according to video that shows them pounding on the front door and threatening the occupants with violence. The intruders wore a Michael Myers mask, a clown face and a dark nun costume.
The woman—her name is kept private for safety—was at home with her daughter, younger brother and family dog. The mother had recently lost her husband, so the night’s fright came at a painful time. The daughter, Shayla, said she first thought the knocks were part of a Halloween joke. When the three men did not leave after she replied “Happy Halloween,” Shayla threatened to call the police.
“They kept knocking, the knocks got louder and louder,” Shayla told WUSA9. The doorbell footage captured the trio smashing a wooden fence, slashing the screens on the back deck, and pounding on a side window before going back to the front door. One suspect shouted, “Either you come out or we come in.” The others demanded entry and made gestures that signaled danger.
The masked men told the occupants that they would “take a chair and break the door.” Shayla says they literally threatened to kill the family. After about 10 minutes of terror, the intruders left, taking nothing but the memory of their threats.
Alexandria police are treating the incident as a very serious matter. Chief Tarrik McGuire said the suspects “made threatening and alarming comments to the family” and that the men’s actions fit the state definition of burglary under Virginia law. Police are reviewing nearby surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the men. They warn residents that the assault could have been avoided if citizens had used their legal 2nd Amendment defenses, though no one chose to do so.
Social media users shared the terrifying video, comparing the scene to the 2013 film “The Purge.” One user on X wrote, “Literally The Purge,” while another cautioned, “They’re lucky they didn’t get shot.” Other commenters criticized the men’s brazen behavior and urged people to stay safe.
The Alexandria Police Department will presumably charge the suspects for burglary and criminal threats. The police chief urged residents not to approach or threaten anyone at doorways, stressing that these actions can end badly.
Shayla says she is still shaken and her mother has begun to live in fear. She added that such an attack could have escalated further, reinforcing the importance of being vigilant and ready to act by calling law enforcement when needed.
