Relatives of Hamas hostages protest outside UN headquarters, demand release

Relatives of people held hostage by Hamas gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Friday, calling on the world to push hard for their loved ones’ quick release. The emotional protest highlighted the ongoing pain from the Israel-Hamas war, now in its second year.

One relative spoke to , stressing that getting the hostages home safely tops everything else. “My message to the international community is clear: If you don’t wake up now to the threat of radical Islamic groups pushing their agenda, you’ll end up just like us,” he said. He warned that failing to act against Hamas, its allies, and other extremists means more countries could face the same dangers. He added that 80% of Israelis—not just Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—want the war to end and the captives freed. “Once we bring them back, we can handle the rest,” he explained. “We need our soldiers home, and we have to stop this endless cycle of suffering and death.”

The demonstration came during the fourth day of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In a strong speech, Netanyahu vowed Israel won’t back down in its fight against Hamas. He noted that while Hamas forces have weakened, they still threaten to repeat the brutal attacks of October 7, 2023, that sparked the current conflict.

“Thanks to our people’s determination, our soldiers’ bravery, and tough choices, Israel turned its darkest moment into one of history’s biggest military turnarounds,” Netanyahu said. “But we’re not finished yet.”

His words landed amid rising criticism from key allies. Recently, the UK, France, Australia, and Canada joined others in recognizing a Palestinian state, and ceasefire demands have filled discussions at this year’s UNGA. Netanyahu brushed off the pressure as fake concern. “Deep down, you know Israel is fighting your battle too,” he told the assembly. In a candid aside, he revealed that while some leaders publicly criticize Israel, they quietly express gratitude for its top-notch intelligence work. “Time and again, we’ve stopped terrorist plots in their capitals and saved lives,” he said.
