Los Angeles County police rushed to Pink Beauty Supply in Compton on Sunday afternoon after several customers reported a violent altercation. Officers arrived around 3:30 p.m. and discovered a 42‑year‑old man lying dead from a gunshot wound.
The suspect had entered the store, followed a female customer, and groped her. Employees demanded that he leave, but the man began shouting, threatening to kill anyone inside, and started throwing and damaging merchandise. Witnesses said he was holding what looked like a knife.
When one woman pulled a handgun to defend herself, the suspect rushed at her. She fired a warning shot and then a second shot that hit him. She was unharmed and is cooperating with the investigation; she was not arrested, as the prosecutor’s office will decide whether she faces charges.
The dead suspect had a history of assault, robbery and theft convictions and may have had gang ties, according to CBS LA. Surveillance video shows other shoppers were in the store during the standoff.
Neighbors and frequent customers expressed shock. “I was lucky nobody else got hurt,” said one regular. “It’s scary to see someone bring a gun into a place people go for everyday stuff.”
Compton has long struggled with street violence, ranking ninth in the U.S. for homicide rates in 2024. Recent data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department shows a slight decline in violent crime over the past year, but incidents like this at a local beauty store remind residents of the ongoing challenges.
