DC National Guard terror suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal was ‘radicalized’ after coming to US, Noem says
According to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, the individual who shot two National Guard troops in Washington, DC last week was most likely “radicalized” after coming to the United States.
The suspect, 29‑year‑old Afghan Rahmanullah Lakanwal, previously worked for a CIA “Zero Unit” in Afghanistan before being admitted to the U.S. in 2021.
He was taken into custody last Wednesday amid a shooting spree that claimed one National Guard member’s life and left another critically wounded.
In a Sunday appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Noem said she believes his radicalization occurred while he was in the country.
She added that the influence came through contacts in his home community and that authorities are continuing to speak with anyone who interacted with him.
Noem also noted early cooperation and warned that the U.S. would not tolerate such incidents again, emphasizing that unvetted arrivals should not be allowed to roam free.
